Statement by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC)

21 May 2011

1    "Mr Dominique Strauss-Kahn's resignation as Managing Director (MD) comes after a critical period in the Fund's history, during which he led its effective response to the global financial crisis and carried through institutional reforms to strengthen the Fund's relevance in a new global economic environment.

2    The selection process for a new MD has begun. The challenges we face are pressing, and an early conclusion to the selection process will be advantageous. It is also imperative that the process be open, transparent and merit-based, so as to ensure the selection of a highly capable candidate, with the qualities needed to engage with a broad group of stake-holders internationally and sustain the Fund's active and effective role in global economic management."
