Singapore Invited to Participate in the G20 Summit

01 Dec 2013

1.  Singapore has been invited to participate in the G20 Summit in Brisbane, Australia, from 15 to 16 November 2014. The Brisbane Summit will be the ninth meeting of G20 heads of state and government.  The Leaders will discuss the challenges facing the global economy and the policies needed to promote strong, sustainable and balanced growth.

2.   As a major financial centre and investment hub, Singapore looks forward to contributing to discussions in the G20 on global financial reforms, infrastructure investment financing and the multilateral trading system.

3.  Singapore appreciates Australia’s efforts to reach out to non-G20 members. As a member of the Global Governance Group (3G)[1], Singapore will work closely with Australia to promote greater engagement between G20 and the wider United Nations (UN) membership. The 3G believes that the G20 should continue to do its part to re-invigorate global economic growth and work with non-members, the UN and international organisations to translate its agenda into action.

4.  Singapore and Australia enjoy a warm and longstanding partnership. Both countries cooperate closely in many regional and multilateral fora such as Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and East Asia Summit. Singapore looks forward to working closely with Australia, as host of the G20 Summit, G20 members, and other invited partners, to achieve a successful outcome at the Brisbane Summit.

[1] The 3G is a grouping of 30 small- and medium-sized states, which seeks to improve the framework of engagement between G20 and non-G20 members so that actions of platforms like the G20 complement and strengthen the UN.  The 3G also advocates transparency, inclusiveness and representativeness in the deliberations of the G20.
