We refer to Ms Sng Hui Ying’s letter “How many work permit holders pay income tax?” (25 June 2012).
Work permit holders, such as domestic helpers, are generally semi-skilled or unskilled. They are unlikely to earn annual incomes above the taxable threshold of $20,000. Even so, about 10% of the work permit holders paid income tax in 2011.
