The Security and External Relations Sector
comprises the Ministry
of Defence (MINDEF), the Ministry
of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and accounts for
41.8% of FY2006 government expenditure.
The Security and External Relations Sector
aims to achieve peace, security and sovereignty
for Singapore and Singaporeans.
Peace, Security and Sovereignty

$10 billion will be allocated
to MINDEF to ensure that Singaporeans continue
to enjoy a peaceful and secure environment,
with Singapore enjoying unimpeded access
to its air and sea lines of communication.

The Singapore Armed Forces
(SAF) will maintain a high state of operational
readiness to respond to any conventional
or non-conventional threat to Singapore's
security, while maintaining a wide circle
of defence ties with both regional and
extra-regional friendly forces.

The SAF will equip its
servicemen with the necessary skills and
knowledge to leverage technologically advanced
weapons and operational doctrines of modern
warfare.

|
|

$343 million will be allocated
to MFA to safeguard and promote the interests
of Singapore and Singaporeans through effective
diplomacy.

Safe and Secure Society
•
|
$23 million will be allocated
to develop a comprehensive anti-crime and
counter-terrorism CCTV security system
that will enhance the preparedness, detection,
and prevention of the twin threats of crime
and terrorism.

|
|

$39 million will be allocated
for the construction of new Civil Defence
public shelters in MRT stations along the
Circle Line and for the maintenance of
existing public shelters around Singapore.

|
|
|
|

$218 million will be allocated
to maintain border security through ensuring
that the movement of people, goods and
conveyances passing through checkpoints
are legitimate and lawful.

|
|
|
|

|
$7 million will be allocated
to fund the Expanded Home Detention scheme.
The scheme allows suitable inmates to serve
the tail end of their sentence at their
residence. Another $10 million will fund
the aftercare programmes of Halfway Houses.
