The measures I have set out
will help ease the pain for Singaporeans in
making the transition, lower costs for businesses,
help companies build capabilities and stimulate
demand for the domestic sector. The Ministries
will be providing further details of the measures
under their charge over the next few weeks. |

This help package to Singaporeans
and businesses amounts to $1 billion. The
Clerk will now distribute a summary list of
the measures. The package is almost equal
to the CPF savings to employers. This package
will help Singaporeans and businesses tide
over the downturn and ride the path to recovery.

However, this package by itself
cannot restore our economy to steady growth.
We must continue to upgrade our capabilities
and improve our competitiveness. We must make
Singapore an attractive place for businesses,
investments, talent and tourists. We will
have to move vigorously and decisively to
attract all of them here, while retaining
and growing as much as possible of what we
already have. If we can do that, then Singapore
will be brought firmly back to the path of
recovery and growth. |
