FY2001 Expenditure Highlights

Economic Development Sector

The budget for the economic development sector, at $4.2 billion, takes up the third largest share (15%) of total government expenditure. The key expenditure items for this sector are:

Continuing Education & Skills Upgrading

     
 
  • $30 million to fund the continuous upgrade of skills and knowledge of the workforce under the Manpower Development Assistance Scheme (MDAS) and other initiatives
     
  • $500 million contribution to the Lifelong Learning Endowment Fund
     

    Research & Development

         
     
  • $625 million to fund research and development activities
     

    Industry & Trade Promotion and Development

         
     
  • $240 million to promote industries in Singapore and upgrade industrial capabilities under the Economic Development Assistance Scheme (EDAS)
     
  • $10 million to implement Trade Development Incentive Scheme
     
  • $170 million to help local Small and Medium Enterprises under the Enterprise Development Fund
     

    Infrastructure Development

         
     
  • $1.8 billion to develop and manage the land transport system
     
  • $67 million to promote and develop the Information and Communications Technology sector
